Introduced in 1955, the Les Paul Special was Gibson’s answer to working musicians who wanted Les Paul tone and feel without the high price tag. Equipped with two P-90 pickups, a wraparound bridge, and a slab mahogany body, it was stripped-down but absolutely ferocious in sound — raw, biting, and full of character.
Its now-famous “TV Yellow” finish wasn’t just about looks. Gibson marketed it as a color that would look better on black-and-white television broadcasts — less glare than white, more punch than natural wood. What was meant as a practical choice became one of the most iconic finishes in guitar history.
The Special was the rebel’s Les Paul — affordable, gritty, and made for the stage. From punk to blues to classic rock, the TV Yellow Special still screams with attitude today.
