In 1961, Gibson unleashed a radical redesign of the Les Paul Standard — thinner, lighter, and sharper. Its pointed double-cutaway horns, slim-taper neck, and searing PAF humbuckers made it look and sound like nothing before. Though it was born as a “Les Paul,” the guitar’s devilish silhouette soon earned its own name: SG (Solid Guitar).
The first-year SG was raw power wrapped in elegance. With limitless fret access, roaring sustain, and a rebellious look, it quickly became the weapon of choice for legends like Angus Young, Tony Iommi, and Eric Clapton. This isn’t just a guitar — it’s the spark that set hard rock and heavy metal ablaze.
