In 1952, Gibson unveiled the very first Les Paul model, finished in a gleaming gold top chosen by Les himself to symbolize prestige and class. With its carved maple top, solid mahogany body, and P-90 pickups, the Goldtop set the foundation for what would become one of the most celebrated guitar lines in history.
The earliest 1952 models featured a trapeze-style tailpiece and a slightly different neck angle, quirks that mark them as the true pioneers of the Les Paul story. Despite those early design challenges, the Goldtop’s rich sustain and singing tone quickly won over guitarists and laid the groundwork for the ’50s Les Pauls that followed — including the legendary ’59 Burst.
