By 1957, the Les Paul Goldtop had evolved into the guitar that would define a new era of tone. This was the first year Gibson fitted the model with the now-legendary PAF humbuckers — pickups designed by Seth Lover that eliminated hum and delivered the warm, fat sustain we now associate with the greatest Les Pauls ever made.
With its carved maple cap, solid mahogany body, and shimmering metallic gold finish, the ’57 Goldtop combined beauty with groundbreaking innovation. It bridged the gap between the early P-90 Goldtops of the ’50s and the sunburst Les Paul Standards that would follow.
